Calgary police are investigating the death of a man who was found in a vehicle in an alley on Wednesday and say it is the city's first homicide of the year.

Police were called to the 0 – 100 block of Harvest Oak Gate N.E. at about 8:00 p.m. after a passerby reported a vehicle in the alley with blood on it.

When officers arrived they found a deceased male in a parked vehicle in the alley.

“The call was made by a passerby who discovered the vehicle in the back lane, they reported that there was an individual in the vehicle, there was blood in and around the vehicle. The call was made immediately after the discovery. The victim was found unresponsive when CPS uniform members arrived at the scene,” said Staff Sgt. Doug Andrus of the CPS Homicide Unit.

Police don’t believe it was a random incident and confirm that a shooting occurred at the location where Tran was found.

“He was found in a vehicle parked in a back alley, “said Staff Sgt. Andrus. “We had reports of gunshots from the immediate area, I can tell you that they’re related to this investigation, but I can’t comment on the relevance.

The man has been identified as Jackson Tran, 29, of Calgary.

An autopsy has been completed but police are not releasing the cause of death for investigative reasons.

Police say there is nothing to suggest the death was gang related, but they do believe it is drug related.

“I can tell you that he was last seen by his family at approximately 4 o’clock in the afternoon and we’re trying to track his movements from that time until the time he was found,” said Andrus.

Police say they do not have a motive or suspects at this time.
