A peaceful rally was held in Calgary Saturday afternoon to protest the federal government's stance on climate change.

Calgary’s rally, held in the Plus 15 walkway outside of Enbridge’s location in Fifth Avenue Place, was just one of a number of gatherings held across Canada.

Organizers of the ‘Defend our Climate’ events say Stephen Harper’s government is refusing to take meaningful action on climate change.

The rallies are organized by a broad coalition of environmental groups who are opposed to pipeline expansion and rapid oil sands development.

“It’s not that we are saying we have to end all this development right now because we have too much dependency on it,” explained Chantal Chagnon of the Green Party of Canada. “What we are saying is we have to slow it down, do it smartly and safely.”

Saturday’s rallies were held as world leaders gather in Poland to discuss plans for international cooperation on climate change.
