Airdrie RCMP is investigating after a minivan crashed into a home in the southwest side of that city on Wednesday afternoon.

At about 2:30 p.m., police were called the scene in the neighbourhood of Bayside after reports that a minivan had crashed into a home.

When they arrived, along with members of the Airdrie Fire Service, they found a minivan in the side of a home, after it had crashed through a backyard fence.

Constable Jason Curtis with the Airdrie RCMP says the house was significantly damaged in the crash. “They hit the corner of the house and came in on the basement. The concrete foundation was quite damaged where it meets the wooden frame.”

However, he says there is no fear of any further damage, such as a collapse.

The driver of the vehicle, a woman, was pinned inside and needed to be extricated by fire crews.

She was not injured in the crash.

The homeowners were also inside the house at the time of the crash but they were not injured.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the crash, but believe that speed must have come into play at some point.

“There needed to be some sort of speed at issue, to get up over the curb and through the fence,” said Curtis.

There is no evidence of impairment at this time and there were no road concerns either because it was a clear day with a bare road, he adds.

Nevertheless, the situation is very concerning to police, because of the time of day it occurred and how close it occurred to a bus stop.

Police are reminding residents to obey all posted speed limits, drive with caution, and be aware of school bus stops and reduced speed limits in residential zones.
