Emergency crews were called to a fatal crash west of Calgary on Monday afternoon and closed Highway 22 south of the Trans-Canada for several hours to investigate.

Police were called to the scene of a two vehicle crash on Highway 22 at about 1:30 p.m. and say one person is confirmed dead.

RCMP at the scene say a truck was southbound on Highway 22 and was just coming over the Trans-Canada overpass when a car pulled a u-turn in front of it. The truck hit the car in the driver's side door killing the man behind the wheel.

EMS officials say the deceased is a 48-year-old man from Edmonton and that he was the lone occupant of the vehicle.

There were six people from Wildwood in the second vehicle and two young children were taken to Alberta Children's Hospital in stable condition. Two other children and two adults were assessed by paramedics at the scene and were uninjured.

Police say alcohol and speed are not considered factors in the crash and the name of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The highway was closed in both directions for several hours and was reopened to traffic just after 4:00 p.m.
