Calgarians will have a chance to hear the guitar stylings of Harry Knight one last time before the eight-year-old travels across the Atlantic to continue his mastery of the instrument.

“It’s my career,” explained Harry. “I have a big concert coming up and I never stop playing guitar.”

On Sunday afternoon, the eight-year-old flamenco guitarist will perform alongside a number of local artists during a Sunday afternoon concert at the University of Calgary’s University Theatre. The show is a fundraiser to help cover the costs of Harry’s trip to the Spanish capital of Madrid.

Harry began playing flamenco guitar at the age of four and has reached a level where his father Peter, a decorated flamenco guitarist himself, was unable to offer instruction.Harry’s skills were evident at an early age.

“What I noticed immediately was how much dexterity he had, how much agility, in the hands and the fingers,” said Peter. “It was quite shocking because I’ve been teaching the guitar for 45 years now so you see a lot of hands.”

The musical prodigy practices guitar for between two and four hours a day and never tires of playing.

“He's only been really studying really hard over the last three years,” said Peter. “He's playing material now that I was playing at the end of my career.”

Harry will depart for Madrid in February where he will spend six weeks mastering his skills under the tutelage of some of the world’s top flamenco artists.
