Crews shut down 2nd Street between 10th and 11th Avenues southwest for nearly an hour after a manhole cover blew into the air.

A police officer saw the manhole cover fly about three metres into the air and smoke pour out of the hole at just after 5:00 p.m. There were no injuries, but emergency crews blocked off the area for about an hour while they searched for a cause.

ENMAX reports that crews were working in the area replacing or repairing aging cable, and had cut power to the area while the work was being done. When the power was turned back on, it caused the cover to blow off, however no fire was sparked.

Crews are still working on the cables, and if the work is not done by morning, one lane of traffic could be impacted.
