Following a huge spike in prices in March, the cost for energy in Alberta is dropping back down to normal levels.

Natural gas prices ended up soaring in March, hitting a cost of $9.38 per gigajoule, nearly twice as much as the month before.

Those rates will drop by about half in April.

Direct Energy says that, as a result, the average gas bill will come in at about $96.

One consumer says despite the drop, he isn’t happy.

“A little beyond angry,” says Darrell Young. “You know, it’s the last chance they’re gonna get to throw it to you this year because the weather is smartening up, but it’s bad enough we got to pay the extra $75 in extra billing, leave alone having them double our rates.”

The company says that high gas prices are because of cold temperatures in February, the coldest in 20 years, and an unusually cold March.

Natural gas storage is also at a multi-year low.

The highest winter natural gas prices came in January 2006, when residents in Southern Alberta paid $15.59 per gigajoule.
