Organizers of Calgary’s Pride Week estimated the 2012 parade celebration would be the largest in the event’s history but the 30,000 people who lined Sunday’s parade route and the Shaw Millennium Park street festival surpassed the most optimistic of predictions.
Among the legions of people taking in this year’s celebration of diversity and acceptance was Premier Alison Redford adorned in a rainbow sash. Pride 2012 marked the first time the Premier of Alberta has attended the event and organizers say they’re thrilled by Redford’s support.
According to organizers, Pride Calgary’s substantial growth from its humble beginnings is an indication that Calgary has become more inclusive and more accepting of diversity.
