The brother of Anthony Heffernan, the 27-year-old man who was killed Monday afternoon in a Super 8 motel room in northeast Calgary, is questioning the Calgary Police Service member’s use of lethal force.

Grant Heffernan says he heard news of a shooting death at the motel but did not realize Anthony was dead until police attended his home nearly 12 hours after the incident.

Grant believes the responding members of the CPS went too far, maintaining his brother was not a violent person

“This was avoidable and this was a tragic accident that shouldn't happen,” said Grant. “I don't want anyone else to ever feel to go through what we are right now as a result of what happened that afternoon.”

On Monday afternoon, police responded to the motel and broke down the door of Anthony’s room.

According to police officials, Anthony was in distress and officers attempted to help the man. In an attempt to subdue Anthony, officers used an electroshock weapon. After the electroshock weapon failed to control the suspect, a CPS member shot the man, ending Anthony’s life.

Grant says Anthony was an electrician who dreamed of travelling and starting a family. The family of Anthony is demanding a transparent investigation into the actions of the responding CPS members.
