Calgary fire crews say a blaze at a Tuxedo Park home could have ended much differently for one family if it wasn't for the quick actions of neighbours.

Fire broke out at a home in the 2000 block of Centre St. N.E. at around 1:30 a.m. Friday.

Neighbours called 911 and ran over to help as soon as they saw the flames shooting out of the two-storey building.

Kimberly Van Liett was in her backyard with friends when another of her neighbours spotted the flames. "We all ran from the backyard and saw a family breathing out of the window."

"They couldn't get out. Our other neighbour ran and got his ladder and there were enough Good Samaritans around to put the ladder against the building. We got the whole family out in time," Van Liett said.

Additional crews were called in because of the intense smoke and flames.

Another neighbour, Kevin Wong, thanks the quick thinking of the man who brought the ladder. "We stabilized the ladder and helped the family get to safety."

Mike Jubenville, the contractor who brought the ladder to help the family says it was what anybody would have done. "I was sitting in my backyard, having a beer and minding my own business when I heard one of my neighbours scream that there was a fire across the street. I did what anybody would do and went to see what was going on. I saw there was a family in the building and luckily I had a ladder, and thank god. Like I say, it was pretty common sense. I got the ladder and thank god everybody got out okay."

He says that his actions weren't heroic and were just what anybody would have done. "Everybody thinks what can they do I mean, there is going to be firefighters and paramedics on the way, but when seconds count, you just got to do what you got to do."

Jubenville says he is relieved that everyone got out of the home okay.

The fire was quickly contained to one unit but caused significant damage to the second floor.

Allan Ball, Battalion Chief with the Calgary Fire Department, says that the floods showed that Calgarians are always wiling to step up and help their neighbours.

He also credits smoke detectors in saving the family. "I'd really like to reinforce the importance of having working smoke detectors in all floors of their house. It helped save this family tonight."

Investigators are looking into the cause of the fire and say no injuries were reported.
