Calgary police continue to investigate Friday afternoon’s crash on Crowchild Trail that claimed the life of a 32-year-old man and sent his passenger, a 25-year-old woman, to hospital with life threatening injuries.

Shortly before 5:00 p.m., emergency crews responded to the northbound lanes of Crowchild Trail, between the 33 Ave. S.W. and 17 Ave S.W. exits after a 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe left the road and crashed through a concrete barrier wall.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger was cut from the wreckage and transported by ambulance to the Foothills Medical Centre in serious, potentially life threatening condition.

An investigation by police revealed the driver had lost control of the Tahoe and the northbound vehicle spun across four lanes of traffic before striking the wall. The vehicle’s path was confirmed by 80 metre long tire scuff marks on the road.

In the minutes prior to the incident, police received a domestic related call involving the Chevrolet Tahoe and its occupants. According to a witness, the driver was seen pulling his female passenger out of the Tahoe and onto the sidewalk in the 2600 block of 33 Avenue Southwest.

The man and woman returned to the vehicle and the Tahoe drove eastbound on 33 Avenue before entering the northbound lanes of Crowchild Trail.

The identity of the deceased has not been released.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or the events that occurred prior to the collision is asked to contact the Calgary Police Service traffic unit at 403-567-4000.
