A house fire in the southeast community of Dover Glen has claimed the life of a woman.
Fire crews were called to the home in the 200 block of Dovely Place S.E. at around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday.
They were met with billowing smoke as soon as they arrived, but they were able to contain the fire to the room where it started.
Three people were inside the home at the time of the fire but only two managed to escape.
Acting Battalion Chief Bill Daniel says one person died in the fire.
“A quick size up and a quick knock down. Two people are accounted for but, unfortunately, we did have a fatality. I can’t confirm age or gender.”
The person who died has been identified as a woman who had MS and used a wheelchair to get around.
Neighbours say she was the "grandmother of the neighbourhood", a woman who loved spending time with children in the neighbourhood.
The Arson Unit and medical examiner are now investigating the fire.
No one else was injured and the house sustained heavy smoke damage.
There is no word on any estimate.
