Calgary police are investigating an early morning shooting in the northeast that left one man dead and a second man fighting for his life in hospital.

According to police, gunshots were reported shortly after 3:30 a.m. near the intersection of 52 Street and Rundlehorn Drive Northeast.

Responding officers located a parked SUV in the 5300 block of Rundlehorn Drive with two men suffering from gunshot wounds inside.

EMS arrived at the scene and determined one of the man had succumbed to his injuries. The second man, believed to be in his early twenties, was transported to hospital in critical condition.

The identity of the deceased has not been released.

Police continue to investigate.

“These investigations are very complex but there is no information to link this particular event with any other event that we’re investigating at the point,” said Duty Inspector Darren Leggatt. “These events are certainly more than just concerning, they’re very unsettling.”

Chelsea Belland heard the firing of shots early Saturday morning.

“I heard about four gunshots and I heard some tires,” said the Pineridge resident. “I didn’t want to come outside.”

Belland says her neighbourhood is filled with families and the incident was frighteningly close to her home.

“Too close for comfort. My baby’s just down the street."

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the Calgary Police Service, 403-266-1234, or Crime Stoppers.

Saturday morning's incident is not the first shooting investigation to occur in the block. In the early evening hours of January 24, 2015, a man suffering from a gunshot injury to his torso was located in the 5300 block of Rundlehorn Dr. N.E.  At the time, bullet holes were located in neighbouring businesses.
