When Canadians cast their ballots on October 19, 2015, an additional 30 Members of Parliament will be elected, of which, six will represent Albertans.

Canada’s federal electoral map was overhauled in 2013 to ‘reflect population shifts and growth. As a result, the number of federal ridings increased to 338, a nine per cent increase from the 308 ridings of 2011.

Don Martin, host of CTV's Power Play, says the results of Alberta's recent provincial election may alter the previously held national perception that Alberta is a shoo-in for the Conservatives.

“The Alberta NDP is going to play (a role) in this federal campaign,” suggests Martin. “There’s certainly a sense across Canada that the fact Alberta, the most conservative province in Canada, is willing to go with the NDP gives some motivation to the Tom Mulcair camp and the party even believes their one seat in Edmonton is just the beginning of a big breakthrough in the capital.”

Of Canada's 338 ridings, 34 are situated in Alberta (previously 28).

The redrawn electoral map increased the number of ridings in Calgary to 10 (previously eight).
