The Alberta chapter of the Ferrari Club of America (FCA) is condemning the actions of an unnamed driver following a Tuesday evening collision that sent two women to hospital

Sheila Tancgay and Irish Atibula continue to recover from the injuries they suffered after being struck by a BMW during their walk from the Mucho Burrito where they worked to a Calgary Transit bus stop.

Atibula was on the phone with her father in the Philippines at the time of the crash. The call ended with a loud bang and screams before the line went dead.

Tancgay, 38, suffered broken arms, wrists and a shattered thumb while Atibula, 36, had her pelvis shattered.

The two women are from the Philippines and were sponsored to work in Canada roughly three-and-a-half years ago. The friends work at Mucho Burrito where they save their earnings to support their children and parents back home.

With the interruption to their income, Tancgay fears for their loved ones in the Philippines.

“All I need is to support my family and friends,” said Tancgay. “(I’m) so sad. How can I support them?”

The Calgary Police Service continues its investigation into the crash.

The collision occurred a short distance from the Euro Cars and Coffee event hosted by the Ferrari Club of America – Alberta Chapter.  The event is an informal gathering of people interested in exotic European and collector cars.

Representatives of the chapter say they are ‘mortified by the accident’ and participants are advised not to take part in risky behaviour.

“We have cautioned people not to do burnouts, speed, or otherwise do stunts with their cars,” said the FCA in a statement released through social media. “However, our cautioning does not control their actions. This is not an organized group, but a group of old and soon-to-be friends getting together. It has always been open to the public whether they are a car person or not. We have no control over who attends or what they do before or after the event.”

“Out of respect for these two young women who were injured, the FCA Alberta Chapter and Cardel have decided to suspend Euro Cars and Coffee. We will advise when we start it up again.”

A GoFundMe page has been created to raise funds for Tancgay and Atibula during their recovery.
