A historic building in the city’s northwest suffered significant damage in a Saturday morning attic fire.
Fire crews responded to the blaze just after 9:00 a.m. Flames and smoke could be seen pouring from the roof of the Palfreyville Apartments in the 200 block of 9 St. N.W. and residents of the building’s six apartments were evacuated from their suites.
Crews successfully contained the attic fire from spreading to the apartments below. No one was injured in the fire. The building’s attic was decimated and second floor apartment units suffered minor water and smoke damage.
The two storey building was originally constructed as a duplex in 1911 and has been recognized by the city as historic.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
