Calgary firefighters are warning of the danger posed by Calgary’s frigid waterways after a woman was transported to hospital after spending a period of time in the Bow River.

Emergency crews were called to the banks of the river near 37 St. N.W. after witnesses spotted a submerged woman.

Firefighters successfully removed the woman, believed to be in her early twenties, from the river and EMS transported her by ambulance to hospital in serious, but stable condition.

Acting Calgary Fire Department Battalion Chief Paul Leblanc says the incident is a reminder of the risks associated with Calgary’s rivers during the winter season.

“Please everybody, stay away from the water,” said Acting Batt. Chief Leblanc. “It’s unsafe to be in the water or anywhere near the water at this time of year.”
