Things will be brighter than ever before for residents in five Calgary communities once crews have installed brighter and more-efficient LED streetlights this season.

Starting in the community of Altadore, officials say they will be installing LED light installations in Douglasdale, Marlborough, Tuxedo Park, and Brentwood, replacing existing High Pressure Sodium street lights.

Throughout the whole project, the city plans to retrofit about 80,000 fixtures, finishing work by late fall.

“This is the first step in The City’s larger vision of providing Calgarians with smart, sustainable, and cost-effective infrastructure,” said Barry Poon, Acting Director of Roads in a release. “The LED technology will not only reduce electricity use and lower maintenance costs, but will also provide better quality lighting for our communities and roadways.”

The new fixtures reduce energy consumption by 55 percent, and officials say they have no wasted or spilled light.
