A 30-year-old Calgary man is facing a second degree murder charge in connection to the death of his former common law wife, the mother of his child.

The accused, Kevin Rubletz, remains in police custody in relation to the murder of Jessica Rae Newman, a mother of three.

Rubletz and Newman were in a common law relationship that lasted roughly three years and produced one child. According to Sgt. Doug Andrus of the CPS homicide unit, the pair separated in August of 2014 but remained amicable.

Newman was reported missing after leaving her place of work in Forest Lawn on the evening of March 10. Police believe Newman willingly entered a vehicle Rubletz was driving.

"We believe that she died on the evening of March 10 after she was picked up from work," said Andrus. "She was killed somewhere in and around the city of Calgary and that her body was dumped in a remote location."

Rubletz and Newman were scheduled to attend court on March 11 for a custody hearing.

On May 4, a work crew discovered human remains in a rural ditch near Balzac. An autopsy confirmed the grisly find was the body of Newman.

"We believe a weapon was used but we have not recovered a weapon."

Sgt. Andrus says the second degree murder charge followed the accumulation of forensic and witness evidence.

The 'complete and thorough investigation' involved interviews with Jessica's friends and family members, which led to the seizure of a vehicle for forensic testing.

"We believe that Rubletz had access and drove that vehicle on a regular basis," said Sgt. Andrus.

Rubletz is scheduled to appear in court on Monday
