Dozens of people gathered at a downtown restaurant to remember a beloved former employee whose life was cut short in a suspected case of domestic violence.

The life of Susan Elko, affectionately known as Suzie Q amongst her co-workers at the Black Cat Lounge and Grill, was celebrated at the downtown establishment on Saturday in an event aimed to bring awareness to, and raise money for, an organization which assists victims of abuse.

“We’re trying to raise awareness for domestic abuse and we’re trying to raise some money for Susan’s family as well,” said “It’s kind of a joint venture between us and the YWCA. “

On the afternoon of September 14, the body of the 39-year-old was located in her Mission condo by police following numerous calls to 911 reporting a stabbing.

Police believe Elko had been in a relationship with 24-year-old Scott Monrow Ferguson, the man who has been charged in connection to her death. Investigators consider Elko’s death to be a domestic-related homicide.

Tickets for the event were $15 and donation were collected, wilth all proceeds benefiting the YWCA Sheriff King Home and the Elko family. The food for the Celebration of Life for Susan Elko was provided, without cost, by the restaurant’s suppliers.
