Charges are pending against an unnamed man in connection with two vehicle thefts, alleged attempted vehicle break-ins, erratic driving, three collisions and a police pursuit extending from near Airdrie to Canmore.

Late Tuesday morning, the Cochrane RCMP detachment was warned of a stolen cube van that was being driven erratically while heading from the Airdrie area towards Cochrane.

RCMP members located the suspect vehicle in Cochrane’s Sunset neighbourhood and officers attempted to stop the van.

According to RCMP, the driver ignored the requests of the officers and the van left the community travelling south on Highway 22. At the intersection of Highway 22 and Highway 1A, the suspect vehicle collided with an undisclosed vehicle.

Undeterred, the suspect continued southbound in the van until the vehicle collided with a Jeep Wrangler at the Griffin Road intersection. The suspect exited the cube van, confronted the Jeep’s driver and had the driver exit the vehicle. The suspect drove off in the Jeep heading south on Highway 22.

No injuries were reported in either collision.

The Jeep was witnessed heading westbound on the Trans-Canada Highway with reports indicating the suspect vehicle had been seen driving into oncoming traffic.

Canmore RCMP located the suspect vehicle Tuesday afternoon and confronted the suspect as he was allegedly attempting to gain entry into vehicles. The suspect attempted to flee the scene in the Jeep Wrangler but was arrested after driving the stolen vehicle into an RCMP unit.

According to RCMP, the investigation into the matter continues and charges are pending against the unnamed man who is a resident of Alberta.
