The overwhelming public support for the Calgary Animal Abuse Fund following the deaths of two animals in Willow Park resulted in a surplus of donated funds.

In early 2013, the bodies of Shadow, a husky, and One-Tooth, a cat, were located in neighbourhood alleyways, their mouths taped shut.

Public outrage ensued and the Calgary Animal Abuse Fund, created by Vets to Go, collected $70,000 donations in order to fund a reward for information leading to the culprit’s arrest.

A possible suspect was identified following an investigation by Calgary Humane Society peace officers and, in May 2014, Nicolino Camardi was arrested and charged. Camardi entered a guilty plea to animal cruelty charges and awaits sentencing.

As public tips did not contribute to the arrest of Camardi, organizers with the Calgary Animal Abuse Fund have decided to distribute the donated funds amongst three animal protection groups:

  • Calgary Humane Society ($25,000 to assist its Animal Protection Department)
  • Canadian Federation of Humane Societies ($24,000 to fund the prosecution of animal cruelty cases)
  • Four Feet Companion Foundation ($25,000 to provide grants to registered animal charities)
