Two women from Ontario got a little too close to a grizzly bear while hiking the cave and basin in Banff National Park last week. Hilary Grant and her friend Claire were walking the trail when they spotted the animal from a distance.

Unsure what to do and unarmed---the two ducked into the forest and waited for the bear to pass. Instead, it came to investigate before lumbering off.

According to Parks Canada the women shouldn’t have stuck around.

“The best thing you can do if you see a bear at a distance is continue to give it as much space as possible, to turn around and make different plans for the day.” Said Banff National Park Wildlife Specialist Steve Michel.

Michel says bears are hungry and assertive due to a lack of berries in the mountain parks.
