The SAIT women's basketball team will play a two game series against St. Mary's this weekend and the Trojan’s leading scorer is the CTV Calgary Athlete of the Week.

Rachel Caputo is a fifth year shooting guard and she is about to become the all-time leading scorer in SAIT women's basketball history.

“Somebody just told me about it. Somebody was looking at the stats and said your're close to breaking the record,” said Cauto. “I was pretty excited.”

“Some people might not realize that really scoring isn't her greatest strength in this game. Her best asset is her defensive ability. She typically guards the  other team's best player, holds them down and takes care of the defensive end of the floor first and that’s really what I think makes her special,” said Coach Donovan Martin.

Caputo began the season with 1,159 regular-season career points and needed just 249 to surpass Lisa Erickson as the all-time leading scorer in SAIT women’s basketball history.

Twelve games into her fifth season and Caputo has chalked up 1,384 career regular-season points in Trojans togs, compared to Erickson’s 1,407

Caputo is an Edmonton native and impressed Coach Martin when he first saw her as a 17-year-old high school player.

“We made a great sales pitch I guess and we convinced her this would be the place to be,” said Martin. “We're going to miss her a lot. Obviously it’s one of our priorities in our recruiting this year, is to try to find the next Rachel Caputo and they don't come along everyday so that’s a big project for us.”

“One of my coaches actually was talking to me about how good he is and seemed like a nice guy,” said Caputo. ‘You get to know a lot of people and make lots of good friends and have a good coach. It’s been nice it’s like having a family kind of.”

Caputo was the SAIT Trojans’ Female Athlete of the Year for 2011-12 and is our CTV Calgary Athlete of the Week for Friday, January 18, 2013.

The team takes on the St. Mary’s University College Lightning on Friday night at 6:00 p.m. at the Campus Centre Gym.
