A hailstorm hammered Calgary and surrounding areas on Tuesday afternoon shredding gardens and flooding some city streets.

Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the city at about 5:35 p.m. saying conditions were favourable for damaging winds and large sized hail.

The warning was downgraded to a watch at 8:12 p.m.

CTV Calgary Weather Specialist Steve Rothfels says two storms passed through the area dumping heavy rain and hail.

Calgary Transit experienced delays on all lines due to hail and water on the tracks.

Police say flash flooding in some areas caused flooding and some underpasses have been closed.

They are advising motorists to use caution and alternate routes.
