Calgary police say 56 year old Frank Burton was involved in a confrontation moments before he died.

“The confrontation was witnessed by a lady and her young child,” say Staff Sgt. Doug Andrus. “She was concerned for their safety, immediately left the area, called police and we responded right away.”

Officers were called to the 4200 block of Centre Street Northwest around 9 a.m. Wednesday, September 30 when an injured man was found outside the home.

He was taken to the hospital in life threatening condition where he died.

An autopsy confirms Burton died as a result of multiple stab wounds.

Investigators say Burton had a history of mental illness and in the past put himself in vulnerable positions with people and are working to determine if this may be the motive behind  this attack.

“He was susceptible to offensive comments and outbursts,” says Andrus. “If overheard by someone they could be misconstrued resulting in a confrontation.”

Several ground searches of the area have been completed by officers but residents are being asked to examine their yards and report any weapons or suspicious clothing.

Police are also releasing the description a man considered a suspect in this case. He has darker skin, a stocky build and is approximately 5’10” tall. At the time of the offence, he was wearing a grey hoodie.

Burton lived at the home where the attack took place and police have spoken to five of the eight residents.

This is the 22nd homicide in Calgary this year.
