A 53-year-old man has passed away in hospital following a Thursday afternoon crash at the intersection of Highway 9 and Highway 564.

According to RCMP, crews responded to the intersection, located east of Calgary city limits, at approximately 2:00 p.m. Thursday following a collision involving a car and a pickup truck. Investigators determined the driver of the northbound car had attempted a left hand turn and was struck by an oncoming southbound truck.

The driver of the car, a 53-year-old man from Carstairs, was airlifted by STARS Air Ambulance from the crash scene east of Delacour to a hospital in Calgary in life threatening condition. The driver of the pickup truck was not seriously injured in the crash.

On Thursday evening, the unnamed man from Carstairs succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

RCMP continue to investigate the fatal crash.
