It opened in Calgary over 100 years ago, but the historic Cecil Hotel became a hotbed of criminal activity in its final years, prompting officials to act.

The Cecil hasn’t seen guests since 2009 when the city shut it down, purchasing the building and property for $10M. At that time, it was marked for re-development.

Now, a decision this week could decide a final fate for the building.

Some residents say they want the historic building restored or maintained in some way, but Mayor Naheed Nenshi insists that over years of renovations, there is little historical significance left.

Other than the sign, it’s his opinion that the building should be removed.

A report on the building will be presented to the city’s land and asset committee on Thursday.

It’s possible that the Cecil’s ownership could be transferred to the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation, the organization overseeing the re-development of the East Village.
