A local non-profit organization that helps those trying to escape domestic violence has released a map showing just how prevalent the issue is in Calgary.

HomeFront woks with communities and policing agencies to provide Calgary families with the support, information and resources needed to break the cycle of abuse.

The agency used its data to create a heat map that shows where domestic violence happens in the city and officials say it impacts every quadrant of Calgary.

There have been a number of domestic-related deaths in the city over the past few months and Homefront says a lot of work still needs to be done to end abuse but the first step is realizing domestic violence affects everyone.

“We have always known that domestic violence can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, religion, ethnicity or socio-economic status,” said Maggie MacKillop, Executive Director, HomeFront in a release on Tuesday. “Now we have a visual to represent this fact. Those faced with domestic violence are your neighbours, co-workers, friends and family.”

Homefront says police respond to two domestic conflict related calls every hour of every day and that the problem is growing and situations are escalating.

Homefront is also launching a fundraising campaign called, Cool it, Calgary! aimed at encouraging Calgarians to play a role in reducing the heat of domestic violence in the city.
