A Calgary family says they are still in shock after the death of an 18-month-old baby girl at a day home in the southwest.

Ceira Lynn McGrath was rushed to South Health Campus on November 12 in critical life-threatening condition by EMS.

Paramedics had been called earlier to a home on Silverado Ridge Crescent S.W. for a report of a baby in medical distress.

Unfortunately, Ceira did not survive and died of her injuries.

Ryan McGrath, Ceira’s father, says he doesn't know exactly what happened at the day home, but knows that it was caused by negligence and it could have been prevented.

He adds that her twin brother Colby keeps on asking for his sister, extending the heartbreak.

On Facebook, the family writes that they are at a complete loss and thank everyone for the support and kind words.

The Medical Examiner has not released the cause of death, saying that could take up to six months to determine.

Police have not released any information either, only saying that it is protocol for the Homicide Unit to be involved when the cause of death is unknown.
