Officials at the Drumheller Institution locked down the facility on Monday after some inmates showed symptoms of influenza.
The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) says the safety and security of the facility is its primary concern and that it is working with health authorities to resolve the situation.
Officials say regularly scheduled visits are cancelled and those who have already planned a visit should contact the institution directly.
They say regular activities will resume as soon as it is considered safe to do so.
