Crews were called out to a fire at an apartment building in the northwest and were forced to evacuate residents from the building while they got the blaze under control.

The fire broke out in a 7th floor suite at the Varsity Square Apartments in the 4500 block of Varsity Drive NW at about 3:00 p.m. Wednesday.

Crews called a second alarm for additional resources once they arrived and assessed the situation.

The 193 suite building was evacuated and officials say that no one was injured.

Firefighters were quick to extinguish the fire and contain it.

"From our initial investigation it sounds like the fire started in the kitchen area so there was substantial damage to that area but the rest of the suite should be fine," said Battalion Chief Al Magwood. "At the present time the fire is out and we're just reassessing the area for toxicity and smoke to make sure that the building is habitable for the occupants."

Residents were being kept warm in Calgary Transit buses until it was safe to return to their units.

Most were able to return to their suites late Wednesday.

Crews remain at the scene and the cause is under investigation.
