A Calgary judge has decided to delay a decision on a sentence for a former Canadian soldier who was caught planning a deadly attack on a Veterans Affair office in the city.

Glen Gieschen was arrested last January at his parent’s acreage outside Calgary city limits.

When police found him, he was dressed in camouflage and was carrying a loaded handgun. Numerous other weapons were found in his car along with a cache of ammunition.

During his trial Gieschen admitted that while he had a detailed plan of what he intended to do, he didn’t have the intention to carry through with it.

According to documents, Gieschen had been on long term military disability since 2011 and was in conflict with the Veterans Affairs office over compensation.

His defence lawyer Tonii Roulston says Gieschen’s wife and other family members are all anxious about his health because he is suffering from MS.

Roulston says her client is waiting for a decision, but they had to agree with the Crown’s request for an adjournment because they haven’t had enough time to review a forensic assessment report.

She isn’t saying anything about the type of sentence she is seeking for her client.

Gieschen is at the Calgary Remand Centre at present, but has requested to be moved to a federal facility to access better health care.

The new sentence date is set for February 11.
