Roughly 70 occupants of an apartment building in the community of Dalhousie were temporarily displaced from their homes following a Friday morning fire.

Just after 10:00 a.m., fire crews responded to The Fortress highrise building in the 4900 block of Dalton Dr. N.W. after a resident on the 17th floor noticed smoke and called 911.

Members of the CFD observed smoke billowing from a 16th floor apartment and the firefighters pulled the building’s alarm to initiate the evacuation of the building.

The efforts of the fire crews stopped the blaze from spreading outside of the apartment’s kitchen, where the fire had originated, and the fire was extinguished.  According to fire officials, the unit suffered significant smoke damage but an estimated value of the damage has not been determined.

No injuries were reported and residents were allowed to return to their suites.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
