Members of the Cochrane RCMP detachment have arrested and charged a 36-year-old Morley resident in connection to a Thursday night armed robbery during which a cab driver was stripped of their cash and vehicle at knifepoint.

At approximately 6:30 p.m., a cab driver picked up a fare in Calgary and drove the male passenger to the Stoney Nakoda First Nation, west of the city.

According to RCMP members, the passenger was impaired and directed the driver to an undisclosed residence on the reserve. The man exited the car and told the driver he would return with payment.

After a short amount of time, the man returned from the home with a knife and demanded cash from the driver. The cab driver offered a small amount of money and the suspect proceeded to chase the victim around the vehicle.

The suspect entered the vehicle and drove off, leaving the victim standing in the cold.

Cochrane RCMP members were notified of the robbery and located the suspect and the taxi in the driveway of a home on the Stoney Nakoda First Nation.

The unidentified suspect, a 36-year-old man from Morley, was arrested and charged with:

  • Robbery
  • Impaired Care or Control of a Motor Vehicle
  • Breach of Recognizance (two counts)

The cab driver received assistance from Cochrane and Area Victim Services following the robbery.
