Five Calgary neighbourhoods are being outfitted with new high efficiency street lights and the city says the LED technology will reduce electricity consumption and save about $5M a year when the project is complete.

The city is changing out the old High Pressure Sodium fixtures with LED installations and says it is a best-fit option for city roadways.

The first phase of the project is already underway in Altadore, Douglasdale, Marlborough, Brentwood and Tuxedo Park and will see about 2500 lights replaced.

The five communities were selected because they represent a wide range of designs and currently use a variety of light wattages.

The lights will be in place in the first phase communities by the end of September and the city says it hopes to have all 80,000 lights in the city changed out by 2018.

The total cost of the project in $32M but the city says it will save about $5M a year in energy costs.

The new lights also last longer, about 15 years, and require less maintenance which should add up to more savings in the long run.
