For the first time in more than two decades, the residents of the northeast riding of Calgary Cross will not encounter Yvonne Fritz's name on the provincial election ballot.

On Wednesday morning, Fritz announced her retirement from public life, ending a political career which lasted for more than 27 years.

“I am thankful to my constituents for placing their trust and support in me for 27 years,” said Fritz in an email release. “The insight and wise counsel of my Calgary Cross Constituency Board has inspired me as an MLA. I am confident Alberta has a bright future with the leadership of Premiere Jim Prentice.”

Prior to her tenure as MLA for Calgary Cross, Fritz served in Calgary Council as the Alderman for Ward 5 from 1988 until 1993.

Fritz worked as a registered nurse at Calgary General Hospital for more than 20 years before pursuing a career in politics.
