The annual ranking of Alberta’s 307 high schools has been released and Calgary area schools feature prominently at the top of the list.

According to The Fraser Institute’s Report Card on Alberta’s High Schools 2016, six of the top 10 schools in the province are situated in Calgary.

“This is a good day for Calgary,” said Peter Cowley, The Fraser Institute’s director of school performance studies. “As with every region, some schools will do better than others and it’s the comparison that’s important.”

Calgary's Webber Academy and Edmonton's Old Scona were named the top schools in the province.

The high schools are ranked based on academic performance including the results of provincial-wide testing and graduation rates.

“When parents want to decide on a school for their kids, they’re going to look to see, in general, how the school is doing academically when compared to other schools.”

The report card also identifies schools that have exhibited significant improvement. Of the 25 fastest improving schools, four are situated in Calgary including Ernest Manning, Bishop Carroll, Bishop McNally and Central Memorial.
