A 40-year-old Calgary man has been charged in connection to the death of a woman whose dismembered body was found in the Crescent Heights area last week.

At about 8:00 a.m., police were called to a grassy area near the intersection of Centre Street and Samis Road N.E. to check on the welfare of a person in the area. Crews declared the victim dead at the scene.

Investigators are treating the woman’s death as suspicious because police say the body was concealed and not intact.

“She was reported missing on June 9th by a family member, which would be after she was discovered,” said Insp. Don Coleman from the Calgary Police Service Major Crimes Section.

Police say a tip from the public led them to believe that the woman died at a residence in the 3900 block of 1 Street N.W. and it is alleged that a man who lived at the home then decided to dispose of her remains at a number of locations, including the park in Crescent Heights.

“It proved quite significant in this case and what happens with tips from the public, there’s investigative steps that are undertaken right away and if information from the public can corroborate some of that, in this case there was two pieces of information that came forward that were helpful to investigators for sure,” said Coleman. “We believe that between the residence and Crescent Heights park there would be locations in there that some of the body parts might have been disposed of.”

Joshua Jordan Weise, 40, of Calgary, is charged with one count of offering an indignity to human remains and will appear in court on Monday.

“We don’t believe that the death is criminal in nature however the actions taken post death definitely substantiate criminal activity so those are the charges that were laid,” said Coleman.

The woman’s identity is not being released because it has not yet been determined if her death was criminal in nature and police are working with the Medical Examiner’s Office on a cause of death.

Police say the deceased woman’s next of kin have been notified.
