A man in his mid-20s has been taken to hospital in serious, life-threatening condition after being dragged by a CTrain on Tuesday afternoon.

It happened at Centre Street and 7th Avenue just after 3:00 p.m.

Police confirmed the man was hanging off the mirror of the CTrain and when it started going, he fell off and went under before being dragged for about a block.

It took fire crews about 50 minutes to free the man who was conscious during the rescue effort.

"The patient did suffer multiple traumatic injuries as result of being  trapped and partially dragged by the train," said Stuart Brideaux, EMS. "Another concern we had with prolonged extrication is that he was lying on the cold pavement so hypothermia did become a concern as well."

Crews are investigating what led up to the incident and are relying on witnesses.

“Police and transit officials do have access to witness account and some of the available surveillance equipment along the LRT way,” said Brideaux. “It doesn’t appear that it was an intentional act by the man however that is still under investigation.”

Traffic in the area is being re-routed.
