Police are looking into a pedestrian fatality that happened on the Trans-Canada Highway near Canmore on Saturday and say one of their vehicles was damaged in a crash while they were investigating the death.

The driver of a semi-tractor trailer unit called RCMP in Canmore on July 5th at about 11:30 p.m. and told officers he thought he had hit a pedestrian on the highway.

The driver did not know the exact location so RCMP and partner agencies conducted a search and found a man dead on the Trans-Canada Highway.

Police say it looks like the pedestrian was walking in the eastbound lane of the highway when he was hit. He has been identified as a 30-year-old man from Calgary.

A police cruiser was hit by another vehicle while police were investigating the fatality in the right eastbound lane near Lac Des Arcs.

Police say emergency lights were activated and the lane was closed and officers suspected the driver of the vehicle was impaired.

Josh Edward Johnson, 37, of Calgary, was arrested and charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle, driving over 80 mg%, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

Police say no one was injured in the second collision.
