Seven people have been transported to hospital following an afternoon crash on the highway between Sundre and Olds.

According to EMS, two vehicles collided on Highway 27 near the Highway 22 intersection at approximately 2:30 p.m. Sunday. The makes and models of the vehicles have not been confirmed.

RCMP suspect an SUV with five occupants was exiting the parking lot of the Little Red Deer River Store when it entered the highway and was struck by a westbound car with two occupants.

The driver of the SUV, a man believed to be in his 50s, was airlifted to the Foothills Medical Centre in critical, potentially life threatening condition.

Ground ambulances transported the six other patients from the crash scene to local hospitals in stable, non-life threatening condition. The ages and genders of the six have not been released.

An investigation into the cause of the crash is underway.
