A man who was seriously injured in a crash in southwest Calgary early Friday morning has died of his injuries.

Officers were called to the scene on 104 Avenue S.W. at about 4:00 a.m. and found a car resting up against a tree in front of a home.

The driver and sole occupant, a man in his 20s, was trapped inside the wreckage and had to be cut out of the vehicle.

He was taken to Rockyview General Hospital in critical condition where he later died.

Staff Sergeant Paul Stacey with the CPS Traffic Section said there appeared to be no reason that the vehicle went off the road.

"We have a single vehicle, an SUV, that went off the road for whatever reason, we don't know yet and hit a light standard before coming to rest against a tree."

Stacey said speed is likely a factor in the crash. "There is a lot of impact. Speed, especially on a side road like this, is a factor. We don't know why he went off the road, there is no apparent reason. It is raining out, but the roads aren't particularly slippery. There is nothing to swerve around here that we are aware of."

He said the Traffic Section is looking into the possibility that the driver suffered a medical incident before the crash.

The identity of the victim has not been released.

The investigation is ongoing.
