Police confirm the victim of a Tuesday morning building fire in the northwest has succumbed to his injuries in hospital.
Shortly after 7:00 a.m., crews were called to a three storey building in the 4500 block of 73 Street N.W. in Bowness and encountered smoke billowing from a second floor suite.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze and an injured, unconcious man was located inside the building. Members of the Calgary Fire Department removed the man from the building and attempted CPR. The fire was contained before it could spread to neighbouring units.
According to EMS, a man in his 60s was transported to the Foothills Medical Centre in critical, life threatening condition. The unnamed man was suffering injuries consistent with smoke inhalation. The patient passed away in hospital.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
“We cannot speculate on the cause of the fire,” said Battalion Chief Stu Laird. “Fire investigators remain on scene, and at this time it’s impossible to predict how long the investigation will take.”
The identity of the deceased has not been released.
