The City of Calgary is inviting residents to come out and celebrate the opening of the new West LRT this weekend.

A number of events are planned on Saturday at multiple LRT stations and Ernest Manning High School.

The city will be holding a party that spans over 10 km, from downtown to 69 St. S.W.

It all starts with speeches at the new Downtown West-Kerby Station at 10 a.m.

More speeches will be conducted at Sirocco Station at 10:30 and then an official ribbon-cutting will occur at 60 St. Station at 10:45 a.m.

That will then be followed by festivities at the new Ernest Manning High School, including speeches by Premier Alison Redford and Mayor Naheed Nenshi.

According to a city release, all three stations involved in the celebration will have events, activities and entertainment, with local businesses, including Westbrook Mall, getting in on the excitement with some special promotions.

For Calgarians looking to participate in the event, free shuttles will be available every 15 minutes from downtown to the 69 St. Station with stops at all of the new stations along the West LRT line from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.

The CTrains will also be running for free from the downtown core to 69 St. Station from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event has free admission, but the city asks that anyone attending to donate a non-perishable food item to the Food Bank.

The West LRT officially opens on Dec. 10.
