The search continues in the East Kootenay for two men who failed to return to their campsite after a trip to town on the weekend.

Nicholas Hoefnagels of Cochrane and Stephen Thomson from Canal Flats were camping at a lake in the area and were last seen on Saturday afternoon.

The pair reportedly went into town to pick up some dirt bikes.

They did not return to camp and were reported missing on Sunday at about 2:30 a.m.

Search crews from several jurisdictions have been searching the area near Canal Flats for the men ever since.

On Monday, crews found a spot along Findlay Creek Forest Service Road where a vehicle went off the road and rolled down a steep embankment and into Findlay Creek.

Personal items belonging to the two men were discovered by a SAR rope team on the bank near the water.

Crews spent the day searching the area from the ground and air but were unable to locate the men.

A RCMP dive team is waiting for the river to calm before they can go in and search for the pair and the vehicle.

Police say that the water levels in the creek are very high and visibility is low which is making it unsafe to enter. The area around the creek is also steep and rocky which is limiting access.

An RCMP helicopter will be back in the air searching the area on Tuesday.
