Two men face charges following a police investigation into the discovery of methamphetamine on Christmas cards addressed to inmates at the Medicine Hat Remand Centre.

In December of 2015, remand centre staff intercepted four Christmas cards addressed to inmates. The cards tested positive for methamphetamine and the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) was notified of the meth mail.

Following an investigation into the incident involving DNA and lab analysis, ALERT identified two suspects. ALERT suspects the Christmas cards were soaked in liquid meth that the recipients would extract.

“A great deal of sophistication was employed in a case like this,” explained Staff Sergeant Jason Graham of the Medicine Hat guns and gangs unit. “I have to credit the investigation team for their tenacity in pursuing these drug dealers.”

On April 25, officers arrested 32-year-old Ryan Horb of Medicine Hat. Horb has been charged with trafficking methamphetamine.

The following day, an arrest warrant was issued for 25-year-old Justin Yaholnitsky who currently resides in a penitentiary in Saskatchewan. Yaholnitsky also faces a methamphetamine trafficking charge.
