Minimum wage in Alberta has gone up.  It is now $10.20 an hour.

It was $9.95 an hour, which was the lowest rate in Canada.

The liquor server minimum wage has also increased, rising from $9.05 to $9.20 per hour.

The $1 per hour difference between the two wages is to acknowledge that liquor servers typically earn tips.  

Roughly 25,700 people in Alberta earn minimum wage which works out to 1.5 per cent of employees in Alberta.

Here's how Alberta's general minimum wage currently stacks up against the rest of Canada:

  • Ontario - $11.00
  • Nunavut - $11.00
  • Yukon - $10.72
  • Manitoba - $10.45  (going up to $10.70 October 1, 2014)
  • Nova Scotia - $10.40
  • Quebec - $10.35
  • British Columbia - $10.25
  • Alberta - $10.20
  • Prince Edward Island - $10.20  (going up to $10.35 as of October 1, 2014)
  • Northwest Territories - $10.00
  • New Brunswick - $10.00
  • Newfoundland & Labrador - $10.00  (going to up to $10.25 as of October 1, 2014)
  • Saskatchewan - $10.00  (going up to $10.20 October 1, 2014)
