Calgary police are now classifying the death of a man in a rooming house fire as a homicide.

Emergency crews were called to a residence in the 300 block of 25 Ave. S.W. at about 9:30 p.m. on Wedensday, Sept. 12 for reports of a fire.

When crews arrived they found smoke coming from the structure and rescued three people from the roof of the building.

Firefighters found another man unconscious in a room on the second floor of the home. He was transported to hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The victim was identified as Daniel McWha, 57, of Calgary and the Medical Examiner has determined he died from fire-related injuries.

Police are now calling McWha’s death a homicide based on the autopsy and examination of the scene.

Investigators with the Homicide Unit, Arson Units and CFD say the fire was deliberately set but they are not releasing specifics on how the fire was started.
