A Calgary MLA is in hot water after telling Calgarians they made a big mistake by electing Naheed Nenshi.

Just minutes after Nenshi won the job Calgary North Hill MLA Kyle Fawcett Tweeted the comment.

Later in the evening, he posted another Tweet, saying while he thought Nenshi ran a great campaign, he still wasn't one of Fawcett's top five choices for the job.

He issued an apology Monday afternoon, saying he didn't mean to question the democratic process, and he didn't want to start the relationship between the province and the mayor on the wrong foot.

The province is sensitive about its relationship with Calgarians.

In the last few years, Ed Stelmach has taken a lot of heat for ignoring Calgary's needs, according to a lot of people.

Many say that's why he lost a seat here to the Wildrose Alliance in the last by-election,

The premier said Fawcett was likely acting out of emotion.

Two other cabinet ministers also chimed in, saying it's important that the two governments can work together, and that the voters are always right.

That's echoed by one political analyst.

"Politicians are free to express their views and endorse whoever they want, but Calgary expressed its will last night and that has to be respected. This is a democratic decision," says U of C Political Scientist David Taras.

Nenshi also says the premier expressed solidarity with him, since both were underdogs in their leadership races and both came out on top.
